Makerere University Endowment Fund (MakEF) is an entity of Makerere University mandated to achieve long term financial sustainability of the University. The fund registered by a Trustee Deed, dated 18th September, 2014, is to be invested perpetually to balance the needs of current and future University beneficiaries. The principal will be preserved and remains invested to provide for future beneficiaries and a percentage of the income is spent on current beneficiaries. This is aimed at furthering the mandate of Makerere University by providing financial support through contributions to the University budget. The fund is governed under the provisions of the Trustee Deed, the Endowment Rules and Laws of Uganda.
MakEF is managed by a seven member Board of Trustees which I chair. The first Board expected to serve an initial term of 4 years, was inaugurated on 17th July, 2014.Other members include;
The seed funding for the Fund is fromMakerere University Investment Fund currently managed by Crown Agents Management Limited (CAIML), UK1 and other contributions are derived from the income sources listed below;
- Annual contributions made by both University students and Institutions affiliated to the University;
- Donations and/or endowment gifts;
- Funds set aside from University resources;
- Funds from Makerere University Holding Company Limited;
- Makerere University Alumni Fund(Annual small contributions);
- Private Investors’ contributions/donations; and
- Any other source as may be acceptable to Council
World over, universities have been able to gain prestige because of support from their endowments. University of Harvard, Yale and Princeton, are such universities whose Endowment Funds arethe University’s largest financial asset, contributing to these universities’ missions of student support, teaching and research.
We call upon all people of good will (friends, alumni and other stakeholders) to contribute towards the growth of the fund.
